Two requirements apply for every subject:
- A postgraduate degree in the relevant subject from a recognized university
- An NCTE-recognized B.Ed. degree
For example, for the Hindi PGT post, candidates need a postgraduate degree in Hindi (in some cases a BA with Sanskrit as a subject) plus a B.Ed. Exact subject-wise eligibility criteria are listed in detail in the official notification.
Exam Pattern & Syllabus
Selection is based on 400 total marks:
- Written Exam – 360 marks (120 objective/MCQ questions)
- 30 questions from General Knowledge
- 90 questions from the concerned subject
- Duration: 2 hours
- Marking: +3 for a correct answer, -1 for a wrong or multiple-marked answer (negative marking)
- Interview – 40 marks
- The detailed syllabus is available on the UPESSC official website.
Selection Process & Interview
A merit list will be prepared based on written exam marks, and shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. Interview details will be notified at least 10 days in advance. In case of a tie in merit, preference is given first by written exam marks, then interview marks, then postgraduate percentage, and finally training qualification percentage.

PYQs & Practice Resources
Since UPESSC is a relatively newer commission, dedicated PGT-specific previous year papers may be limited. However, PYQs still play a crucial role in preparation:
- Understand the question difficulty and pattern: PYQs from similar UP-level teaching recruitment exams (like UPSESSB TGT, UP LT Grade, etc.) help candidates gauge the type and difficulty of objective questions asked.
- Identify high-weightage topics: Analyzing past papers reveals which topics within General Knowledge and subject-specific sections are repeatedly tested.
- Practice time management: With 120 questions to be solved in 2 hours (negative marking applicable), solving PYQs under timed conditions builds speed and accuracy.
- Reduce negative marking risk: Reviewing past exam patterns helps candidates learn to avoid guesswork on unfamiliar questions, since a wrong answer costs 1 mark.
- Bridge static GK and subject knowledge: Many General Knowledge questions in such exams overlap with static GK asked in other UP-level exams, making cross-exam PYQ practice valuable.
